PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Four phases. 44 weeks. One career launch.

A structured progression from security fundamentals to advanced incident response, with each phase building on the last.

Foundations

Weeks 1–11

Security fundamentals and onboarding

  • Cybersecurity basics, SOC processes and escalation workflows

     

  • Cyberbit Junior SOC Analyst 1 training track
  • CompTIA Security+ certification path (funded); Google Cybersecurity Certificate as funded alternate if already Security+ certified
  • Core tools: Google SecOps (Investigative Dashboards, SIEM Log Search, IP Blocking), CrowdStrike Endpoint Protection, Google Applied Threat Intelligence)
  • Guest lectures and departmental presentations (Risk, IAM, Cloud Security/AWS)

  Deliverable: Certification (Security+ / Google Cybersecurity Certificate) + Alert Triage Case Study + Risk Register Entry + UDM Query Exercise

SOC operations

Weeks 12–22

Monitoring and basic investigations

  • Live SOC shifts in the ASU environment with ticket rotations on endpoint-malware and phishing threats
  • Endpoint-malware and phishing investigation deep-dives
  • Weekly incident reviews with ASU SOC analysts
  • CrowdStrike Certified Falcon Responder (CCFR) certification track
  • Biweekly mentorship from vendor partners, plus weekly SOC Coordinator mentorship
  • CTF exercise

  Deliverable: 5–10 Investigation Reports/Week + Peer-Reviewed Escalation Docs + CCFR Certification + Week 21 Cyber Range IR Baseline & CTF

Automation, SOAR and AI

Weeks 23–33

Automating SOC workflows

  • Month 1: Threat hunting — anchored by Mandiant TIA, plus Google-led hunting exposure
  • Month 2: SOAR playbook design — hands-on with Google SecOps SOAR
  • Month 3: AI in the SOC — exposure to commercial AI, ASU CreateAI, Google Gemini in Secops, and SOC use-cases for AI
  • Python automations and API integrations (Google Secops & AI platforms)
  • Collaboration with ASU CreateAI team

  Deliverable: Complete SOAR Playbook + Phase 3 Project + Mentor-Panel Presentation

Capstone and career readiness

Weeks 34–44

Advanced projects and career preparation

  • 10 hrs/wk: Formal incident response — second cyber range exercise measured against the Phase 2 baseline
  • 5 hrs/wk: Capstone project (IR-focused or automation/SOAR/AI)
  • 5 hrs/wk: Mock interviews and portfolio assembly
  • Mock technical interviews with a diverse panel — engineer, team lead, manager, executive
  • Career portfolio: SOC logs, incident reports, automation samples 

  Deliverable: Capstone Presentation + Career Portfolio + Final Evaluation

Frequently asked questions

You get hands-on time defending a real organization, a clear progression from foundations to advanced work and funded certifications that map directly to what employers are hiring for — all while staying enrolled at ASU for a full year.

No prior SOC experience is required. You should have foundational knowledge of networking and security concepts (DNS, TCP/IP, basic security) and show zeal for learning new cybersecurity concepts through labs, home projects, CTFs, or other industry activities. 

Yes. The program funds your first attempt at CompTIA Security+ and the CCFR certification. If you already hold Security+, the Google Cybersecurity Certificate is funded as an alternate. Retakes, if needed, are at your own expense.

Yes, and it is required. The program runs continuously across 44 weeks (with approximately 4 weeks of scheduled breaks). You must be available during academic breaks and summer semester.

The inaugural cohort will consist of six students. This allows for personalized mentorship and meaningful hands-on access to enterprise tools and live SOC operations.

You graduate with certifications, a professional portfolio of SOC work, mock interview experience with industry leaders and direct introductions to hiring managers at partner organizations.
