Physical Security

It's easy to snag someone else's laptop or cell phone, but there are several steps you can take to make sure this doesn't happen to your stuff.

  • Use a security locking cable when you computer is at your desk or unattended.
  • Manually lock your screen before you leave your desk.
  • Set an idle timeout that automatically locks the device when not in use.  15 minutes or less is recommended.
  • Store your laptop(s) and other portable devices in a secure location before leaving work.
  • Never leave your computer in plain view unattended.
  • Use location tools on your devices that will show its location if lost or stolen.
  • Use encrypted thumb and flash drives, and ensure all of your computer systems are encrypted (Laptop, Smart Phones, etc).
  • Set locked, password-protected screens on all devices including laptops, desktops, tablets, and phones.
  • Get theft insurance for your personal mobile device(s), if available.
  • If your Pitchfork ID or Sun Card is lost or stolen, report the loss to ASU Sun Devil Card Services to deactivate the old ID and to obtain a replacement.
